The Presence of the Goddess: A Vision Whose Time Has Returned Review

The Presence of the Goddess: A Vision Whose Time Has Returned Feature

  • Traces the development and history of the Goddess in western civilization.
The Presence of the Goddess is the first and only film that traces the development and history of the Goddess in western civilization. It locates the heritage of the Goddess in time and place by reconstructing the ancient bridge between the psyche and the world. You will explore how the role of women shaped a concept of the diety and become aware of the consequent effect on the psyche and societies in successive historical ages. In the present age the ways of the Goddess provide society with a humanizing dimension, increasing the meaning and value of life. The Presence of the Goddess entertains, inspires and reminds you of our ancient connection with the earth. Finally, we have history that transcends gender barriers and calls forth the strength of the feminine principle residing in all men and women.

That is, Ollie takes the oath, but Stanley balks. When asked why, Stanley answers that he's afraid his wife won't let him go. Ollie is appalled: "Every man must be king in his own castle." But when Ollie meekly brings up the subject of the convention with his wife Lollie (Mae Busch), she soon dethrones the "king." Lollie wants to take a vacation in the mountains, and is dead-set against her husband going around "with a pack of hooligans." But Ollie is determined to attend the convention, and to that end cooks up a scheme with Stanley. Ollie will pretend to be deathly ill; Stan will fix it so the doctor will prescribe a trip to Honolulu. Knowing that his wife can't stand going on sea voyages, Ollie will request that Stan accompany him to Hawaii--then, both men will sneak off to Chicago. A few hitches notwithstanding (Stan hires a veterinarian instead of a doctor, explaining that he didn't think the man's religion would make any difference), the boys go to the convention, where they cut up royally with practical joker Charley Chase. Alas, the Honolulu-bound boat on which Stan and Ollie are supposed to be travelling is sunk in a typhoon. While the grief-stricken wives are at the steamship company attempting to find out if their husbands survived the sea disaster, Stan and Ollie arrive home, wearing leis and carrying pineapples as "evidence" of their Honolulu vacation. When the boys find out about the shipwreck,

My Fair Madeline

My Fair Madeline Review

A charming story of friendship and girl power pits the pint-sized Madeline against a couple of upper crust crooks, while underscoring the importance of integrity and loyalty. The tale begins in Paris when Miss Clavel (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg) escorts her boarding school girls to the Louvre museum. Captivated by Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa," the fearless and feisty Madeline lingers behind, and becomes the sole witness to an attempted robbery of the rare painting. When she raises a ruckus, the crooks flee and Madeline is left to take the blame for the catastrophe. Banished to a London finishing school as punishment, Madeline goes undercover to expose the thieves, while her best pals get to work in Paris--"intent on finding the truth, 11 girls go out to sleuth." Based on author Ludwig Bemelman's familiar style, the animated film is entirely in rhyme, accompanied by a handful of toe-tappin' tunes. (Ages 3 to 10) --Lynn Gibson

Warren Miller's Ride [VHS]

Warren Miller's Ride [VHS] Review

This dazzling Ride begins with a bang: A terrific piece about Whistler's avalanche hunters, i.e., a team of explosives experts who begin their days blowing away potentially lethal slides before skiers hits steep slopes. Typical of Miller's films, Ride globetrots through some of the most exciting and exotic places on Earth to capture Hollywood-caliber (and often better) footage of extreme snow-sporting. Among these hot spots, so to speak, are New Zealand (where a high mountain considered holy by the Maori offers some interesting downhill challenges), the North Cascades (particularly a couple of breathtaking sites accessible only by helicopter), France (where a resort harvests ski-able snow from ice-fishing), and Breckenridge, Colorado (where snowboarders bounce along the famous Breckenridge Bumps). A highlight is a ski trip in Russia, where three Americans catch a bus through a war zone to reach, as one fellow puts it, "the top of Europe." --Tom Keogh

Shirley Temple: Bright Eyes [VHS]

Shirley Temple: Bright Eyes [VHS] Review

Shirley Temple, the original dancing baby, sings her signature song, "On the Good Ship Lollipop," in this heart-rending drama, one of eight films she made in 1934 (!) at the ripe age of 6, and for which she was honored with a special pint-sized Academy Award. Temple stars as Shirley, the curly-headed "gosh, oh gee"-adorable mascot to a group of aviators since her pilot father "cracked up and went to heaven." Get out your handkerchiefs when Shirley's mother is also killed, setting up a custody battle between the nasty, highfalutin Joy Smythe's curmudgeon uncle Ned; Loop, another pilot; and the society girl who once left Loop grounded at the altar.

Temple's movies are today marketed as children's films, but, like the classic Warner Bros. cartoons, they were made for adults. Her plucky, indomitable spirit helped America get through the Depression. She's perky and precocious to beat the band, but she suffers so on the way to the inevitable happy ending. When she gushes, "It's the best day I've ever had in my whole life," you know tragedy is imminent.

In Bright Eyes she is also at the mercy of bratty Smythe (scene-stealing Jane Withers), a pint-sized tantrum-throwing terror who makes Linda Blair in The Exorcist look like a Teletubbie. A further parental advisory in these politically correct times: Joy's eagerly awaited comeuppance is a real slap in the face. --Donald Liebenson

Kim Possible - A Sitch in Time [VHS]

Kim Possible - A Sitch in Time [VHS] Review

What's the sitch in Kim Possible's first TV movie? A downer: Ron (voiced by Will Freidle) is moving to Norway, meaning an end to civilization as we know it--or at least an end to the Possible-Stoppable team. That's bad news for Kim (Christy Carlson Romano). Losing your trusty sidekick is so not the way you want to tackle a cadre of bad guys trying to use mystical monkey powers to alter the universe's time stream for unspeakably evil purposes. To stop them, Kim has to take a wild ride to her pre-hero past and a dystopian future, but just when things are looking grim, remember that anything's possible for a Possible. Particularly Kim Possible, who's still tough, witty, and refreshingly free of any saucy teen attitude. Guest voices include Michael Dorn, Michael Clarke Duncan, Freddie Prinze Jr., Vivica Fox, and Elliott Gould. (Ages 6 to 10; cartoon action) --David Horiuchi
